“If you cannot measure it, you cannot improve it.”
This is what famous British physicist Lord Kelvin said about topics and subjects in the world of physics. I want to connect this idea beyond physics, to the human mind.
I will share my favorite drawing here ( In case I didn't mention earlier, I made this myself..not very neat but it conveys what I want to say):
Welcome to getting in the RIGHT mindset for You, episode 3
Look at this image above. You are here right now on the left side, in your current mindset,
which is shaped by your belief system.
This belief or inherent belief system is based on underlying factors which you rarely think about.
Factors like:
Your past experiences and events.
These are the things that unknowingly shape how you LOOK at everything.
i.e they form your current mindset.
They are the reasons behind why you think or don’t think a certain way.
How you choose to see, i.e. your current mindset, is dictated by these factors.
Think about it.
There must be some things you desire and look forward to in life, this very moment while reading this letter.
You have something on your mind right?
Now pause for a minute and ask yourself why you cannot achieve what you want, right away?
There can be many factors like planning, arranging time, resources etc.
But in my strong opinion there is something you can always START today..towards what you want.
It might obviously take time to achieve your goals and dreams.
But my logic is that TODAY is ALL you see.
Today is ALL you have.
So yes planning and organizing things is good. But your day today has to have something and some time spent on what you want to do most in life.
Why?
Because I strongly believe how we spend our day is how we spend our life.
Our day is the only ‘time’ we are seeing or will ever see.
Tomorrow will be another day and just the ‘day’.
You and I will not get ‘days’ or months all at ‘once’.
We will only get the window of 24 hours, over and over again.
So when is the best time to work and build your dream life? Ask yourself.
If you keep waiting for the perfect moment and time, you are still ‘waiting’.
And the ‘day’ in front of you right now is a waste without taking some form of ‘action’ towards your dream life.
It can be as small as google search
Or Youtube surf on something you want to learn,
Or build.
It can be 5 minutes in today,
But it has to be TODAY.
Tomorrow is not promised.
Tomorrow might not be what you ‘expect’ it to be. I learnt it the hard way, you can read it in full here.
This is why I want you to rethink your current mindset right away.
I want you to rebuild your current mindset.
If you can't find your current mindset, you can't improve it.
If you can't find your current mindset, you cannot start moving towards the right mindset for you.
This is a broad and holistic approach to living a better life each day, by improving your current mindset.
It helps you improve all areas of your life IF you focus and think deeply enough.
Yes lately we are not in the practice of ‘thinking’ much as life is busy but we can always start today right?
The best way to find and start to improve your current mindset:
Think in terms of what you desire in your life today.
Why can't you achieve it in the near future, ask yourself.
Listen to your answer and ask yourself: is it a limiting belief due to something in my background, my social pressures or due to some past events and experiences in my life?
In my experience, most of our thoughts (about a desired life we want, and why it's far away from us today) are due to our limiting beliefs stemming from our background, social perceptions and past experiences.
Yes all those things are real and will remain real. But they don't have to DEFINE what you can do and be TODAY.
Exercise for this week:
Tackle your limiting beliefs one by one
each time you have a restricting thought of why you can't do something right now, question it. What is the root cause of this limiting thought?
Put the limiting thought in either of the boxes in this image here (background, social pressure, past events or experiences)
Think without restrictions, think without thinking of your limiting beliefs.
Think as if you have a blank canvas in front of you today, you can create whatever you want.
And will be able to.
Once you think freely!
Start small, and keep applying this thought process to as many areas of your life as you want.
Next week:
How to do something for You, right here right now.
'Because I strongly believe how we spend our day is how we spend our life.'
A very true and relevant point, Saima. It makes sense; our mindset and how we choose to utilize our time on any given day is a reflection of how we approach our lives in general.
This is a great read , very practical.
"day one " is better that "one day" - this statement has helped me over the year. Thanks, Saima.
